"My brother and I were very young when my mother died but I remember helping her make these cookies for Easter. I shelled the walnuts and my brother would crush them with a hammer. These cookies are special to me and bring back fond childhood memories."--Jean Boniello
Origin: Italian
Ingredients:

4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3 Tbsp. butter, softened
8 tsp. sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 ice water
oil for fruing
FILLING:
2 cups walnuts, chopped fine
3/4-1 cup honey
8 oz. sweet German chocolate (grated)


Preparation:


Mix flour and baking powder. Cut in butter, then add sugar, eggs and vanilla and water . Work the mixture into a pliable dough. Set aside.
Filling:
Mix walnuts and chocolate; add honey a little at a time to form a firm paste. Roll dough to 1/4" thickness. Cut into 3-4" circles. Place 1 tablespoon of filling on each circle, fold over to make a half moon shape. Seal the edges with the tines of a fork. Fry in hot oil until golden brown.
